Overview

Utility Arborist (CUA) & Stump Grinding Specialist 

Purpose:

The Utility Arborist (CUA) & Stump Grinding Specialist supports operations during peak season by providing specialized utility arboriculture and stump grinding services. This role is a production-focused, field-based position responsible for safe and efficient execution of assigned work while maintaining company safety standards and service quality.

Specific Duties:

An Arborist Apprentice will have a variety of duties and tasks to perform daily, varying by the type of work being done at each given site. The main priorities are to assist Arborists with arboricultural practices and leading crews, equipment selection and maintenance, adhering to safety procedures, and occasional interactions with customers.

Utility Arborist (CUA) Responsibilities

 

  • Perform utility vegetation management work in accordance with industry and client standards
  • Prune and remove trees near utility infrastructure following safe work practices
  • Identify hazards and maintain minimum approach distances
  • Support crew operations with a strong focus on safety and compliance
  • Assist with work planning, hazard assessments, and tailboard meetings
  • Maintain clear communication with crew members and supervisors

Stump Grinding Responsibilities

  • Operate stump grinding equipment safely and efficiently
  • Assess job sites and determine appropriate grinding approach
  • Perform stump removal to company and client specifications
  • Conduct site setup, including hazard identification and protection of surrounding property
  • Complete thorough site clean-up following grinding operations
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance of stump grinding equipment

Equipment, Machine and Tool Use

  • Choose and load required equipment for daily operations
  • Perform daily inspections of tools, vehicles, and machinery
  • Safely operate trucks, trailers, and specialized equipment
  • Inspect, refuel, sharpen, maintain, and care for tools and equipment
  • Set up, take down, and clean up of work sites efficiently

Safe Work Practices

  • Follow all company and ANSI Z133 safety standards
  • Inspect worksites, identify hazards, and implement controls
  • Always use and maintain appropriate PPE
  • Participate in safety meetings and tailboard discussions
  • Direct pedestrian and traffic control when required
  • Complete aerial rescue and lift truck rescue training

Other Duties

  • Support crew productivity during peak season demands
  • Maintain positive interactions with clients and the public when required
  • Complete basic documentation (work orders, safety forms, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Utility Arborist training (CUA certification)
  • Previous experience in utility arboriculture and/or vegetation management
  • Demonstrated experience operating stump grinding equipment
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (air brakes endorsement considered an asset)
  • First Aid Certification required
  • Ability to work safely around utilities and heavy equipment

Relationships:

Reports To: Branch Manager / Operations Manager / GTC Supervisor

Works Closely With: Utility crews, ground crews, and operations staff

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily field-based work in a variety of environments (urban, residential, and utility corridors)
  • Operation of heavy equipment and power tools
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Physically demanding work including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing
  • Occasional office work needed to complete paperwork and attend meetings/training
